Begijnhofkerk Sint-Truiden
27 04 1991 - 11 08 1991
The medieval textile treasure from the abbey of Sint-Truiden. For several years, a chest containing skulls and bones of saints was found in the attic of the deanery in Sint-Truiden. The relics were wrapped with medieval fabric fragments woven in Byzantium, Spain, Italy or elsewhere in Western Europe and date from the 6th to 15th centuries. These textile fragments - sometimes including purse, hairnet or shoe - were recently restored. They form the core of an exhibition that recounts how abbot Willem van Rijkel had several relics of the 11,000 Virgins brought from Cologne to Sint-Truiden in 1270-1272. Not only the relic veneration, but also the scientific research and restoration process are covered.
