Lichfield , the stained-glass windows of Herkenrode

Abby of Herkenrode • 01 07 - 31 10 2003

We designed the exhibition “Glasramen van Lichtfield” together with Huub Berger and Ick Reuvis (HIJ), which told the story of the Flemish Renaissance stained glass windows that were shipped from Hasselt to, among others, Lichfield in the United Kingdom after the French Revolution. We recompiled the image of the original stained-glass windows using photos of stained-glass windows from different places. This image was printed on special cloths that could be backlit so that it became a beautiful evocation of how the cathedral must once have looked from the inside.
The Lichfield stained glass windows are one of the best preserved ensembles from the Flemish Renaissance; they were commissioned by Abbess Mechtildis de Lechy of Antwerp between 1532 and 1539.
