Homeless Movies

GENT • 15 october 2016 - 15 january 2017 ROTTERDAM • 25 january - 5 february 2017

For years, visual artist Jasper Rigole has been collecting home movies he finds at flea markets, garage sales and second-hand shops. He analyses, catalogues and digitises them, building what he calls an archive of other people’s memories. These personal souvenirs grant us a glimpse into the past of strangers. They depict the leisure culture and everyday life of the time, but also reveal to us something about the makers of the films.

HOMELESS MOVIES also stepped outside the museum walls. Six artists immersed themselves in the museum’s collection of home movies to distil a new film from it. You could discover the result in film booths at surprising locations in Ghent and Rotterdam. The film booths were in public places somewhere in the city, but at the same time they isolated the viewer from the outside world for a few minutes. Watching the memories of others, voyeurism is never far away.

We designed small booths in which you could individually watch the films.
