Interieuer Kortijk, 1996
‘Nonkel Gilbert's Room’ was an initiative of VIZO and was the Flemish contribution to the XIX Milan Triennial, which took place from 27 February to 10 May 1996. Afterwards, the project was also shown at the 15th edition of the INTERIEUR 96 biennale in Kortrijk. It was a story around the intimacy of the interior and the symbolic identity it conveys. The concept was by cartoonist and painter Benoît, the realisation of the design by Brussels Lof (Jo Klaps). Participating designers included Maarten Van Severen, Francine Van Der Biest, Marie Mees and Robbrecht & Daem. For the interior, some furniture from the Interbellum period was also selected from the collection of the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design and the Sint-Lucas archive of Henry Van de Velde, Huib Hoste and Gaston Eysselinck, among others. Some designers also created objects for the interior, including light objects by Jan Vandendorpe, a sofa after a design by Benoît executed by William Phlips. Objects by sculptors Roos Lapeire and Wim Lambrecht and drawings and paintings by Benoît and his teacher Dan Van Severen were also part of the interior.
